Students are participating in an experimental gardening effort to grow nursery plants at the school. The plan is to sell new types of plants for home gardens.
Most home gardens consist mainly of maize and beans with a few pumpkin plants. After attending a presentation at the school about small-plot gardening, teacher Bertin Sulle rounded up a group of students who are putting that information to work by growing seedlings of varieties such as salad greens, cabbage, and pumpkins. They then plan to sell seedlings to individuals who are taking part in an experimental gardening project at the school or to those who want to grow the seedlings in their home gardens. While it is hoped to raise some money to fund future efforts in this area, the primary goal is to provide experience and knowledge to students and the community about growing more plant options for better nutrition.
