Sponsorship

Education is the key to helping people lift themselves out of poverty. And key to a good education is a favorable learning environment. Your sponsorship of teachers at Tloma Primary School will have a direct and immediate impact on creating such an environment.

Class sizes at Tloma Primary School are currently between 84 and 125 students per classroom. This severe overcrowding presents a difficult to nearly impossible situation for students to learn in and for educators to teach in. The Tanzanian government’s target class size is 45 students.

As a result of the rapidly-growing population in and around Karatu, including Tloma, many of the area’s elementary (primary) schools are in dire need of more teachers. Lack of national funding for teachers has not only left schools short of teachers, it has created a surplus of university graduates with very few employment opportunities.

There are a large number of university graduates who have teaching certificates but they are unable to get one of the few government jobs. While they wait for government positions to become available, some apply to local schools as ‘paid volunteers’ to gain experience and strengthen their CVs. But those ‘volunteer’ positions are paid for by the school, do not pay nearly as much as a government job, and do not offer benefits. Tloma Primary School currently has only three government teachers on staff that are university graduates.

Tloma Giving is working with Tloma Primary School’s headmaster Beatus Martin to hire additional teachers to reduce class sizes to a more manageable level. The goal is to hire ten more teachers. It takes just $100 a month for 12 months ($1200/year) to hire a university-educated teacher. Tloma Giving is seeking donors who can commit to full-year commitments. Smaller contributions will be combined to reach the $1200 amount needed to hire a teacher for a year.
