The school and village are experiencing a serious food shortage. Seasonal rains were too late and too little to support area crops that were sown at the normal planting time. The previous year had similar rainfall, so there is little in reserve to make up the difference. Teacher Bertin Sulle estimates the farm yields are down 40-70%.

Most families primarily eat ugali for their meals, which is a thick, cooked dish of flour made from maize grown on the family farm. The parents typically contribute about 40 pounds of maize per year per child for school lunch. Many do not have it to give this year and the school doesn’t have the goods or the funds to replace it. Obviously, maize prices have increased due to the shortage. The amount of maize and beans needed to provide one day’s lunch for the school costs about $65, depending on the day’s market price.
